The sound of the drums that beat in heaven, Pounding out in a celestial rhythm, Epic, elegant, enlightening hymn: Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren… Even if heard by the lowest of men, It can make their minds and their hearts ascend With just one beat, one peek at this one trend: Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren… What brilliance in the hearts of our children, Who by nature are so simple and pure; The thump of their quick little feet concur: Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren… The sound resounds across a sea of sin; Suddenly true thoughts, old dreams, awaken; The way is clear to a home forgotten: Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren… The blocked third eye may be pummeled open; Sights so amazing, dazzling, and puzzling! Even the rocks are alive and pulsing: Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren, Zhen-Shan-Ren! Evan Mantyk is an English teacher and poet living in New York. Featured Image: “Waist Drum” by Xiaoping Chen.
