Stalks of brown and amber and gold,
mighty when young, wither when old.
Bleached by the sun and watered daily,
Length may distinguish if lord or lady.

    My guess for Brian’s riddle is: the presidency of the United States.

      Close enough. The first is a hairy parent… the second has NO hair apparent, and the third, of course, is the heir apparent.
