Major influences at that time included Shakespeare, T. S. Eliot, Stevens, and Hopkins. From 1977-1979, in the U.S. Army, Pershing Missiles, in Heilbronn, Germany, he created poetic forms, including the bilding, duododecad, and American sonnet. There he was influenced by Austrian Classical music, Western philosophers, from the Pre-Socratics to Wittgenstein and others, particularly Nietzsche, and writers, like Goethe, Hölderlin, and Heine. Back in the USA, he obtained a BS in Math and Computer Science in 1983 at WWU. There he met his wife, a brilliant linguist and scholar, Dawn Maia Lewis. In 1984, they moved to Naselle, WA, where they had and raised two children, Douglas Donald and Stephanie Elise. From 1984-2017, he taught American, British and World literatures, along with courses of algebra, geometry, trig and calculus. Although Wise continued to submit poetry and prose to journals and magazines, through the 1980s, 1990s, and the first decade of the 2000s, the thousands of pages of poetry and prose were rejected, from his essay on “The Comedian as the Letter C” in 1973, which his teacher Elizabeth Bishop thought too good for an undergraduate, up until 2010, when his first two poems were published in an Italian magazine on Italian writers Saba and Eco. In the 2010s, his poetry and essays began to be published in periodicals and on the Internet. Throughout his poetic career, he continued creating new poetic forms, like the tennos and the dodeca, in his search for a classical English line. It was at this time, after so much rejection he began using charichords (anagrammatic heteronyms). In 2017, he retired from teaching, moved to the Metroplex and began a weekly column at Oddball Magazine, though still without a published book of his work as of 2021. - [Become a Member](https://www.classicalpoets.org/join-the-society/): Three Paths to Membership - [Members](https://www.classicalpoets.org/members-3/): X - [Common Feedback on Poetry](https://www.classicalpoets.org/common-feedback-on-poetry/): If your poetry was not selected for publication on the homepage of the Society there are a few common reasons (although no rules are absolute): - [Submit Poetry](https://www.classicalpoets.org/submissionguidelines/): . - [Evan Mantyk, President of the Society](https://www.classicalpoets.org/evan-mantyk-president-of-the-society/): . - [Frank Yu, Chief Financial Officer](https://www.classicalpoets.org/frank-yu/): Frank Yu is Vice President and CFO of The Society of Classical Poets and Treasurer of the board. It is in the songs on the radio, in our national anthems, and in the fight songs of our favorite sports teams; it pervades our literature, our history, and our culture. But, despite poetry’s abundance, poetry that is both new and good is hard to find now, more than ever. Good, new poetry cherishes and builds on the perennial techniques, like meter and rhyme, left to us by 1,400 years of English poets, who have also built on the traditions found in thousands of years of Greek poetry, Latin poetry, Chinese poetry, Japanese poetry, Indian poetry, and poetry of other cultures. Such good, new poetry carries a message infused with the profound insights and lofty character of the poet. It touches on humanity’s quintessential quest for virtue over vice, epic over ephemeral, and beauty over baseness. - [Poetry Competitions](https://www.classicalpoets.org/poetry-competitions/): The Society of Classical Poets 2017 Competition (Deadline December 31, 2016) - [Support the Society of Classical Poets](https://www.classicalpoets.org/support-the-society-of-classical-poets/): The Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization so your donation is tax deductible in the United States.
