Lorna Davis is a life-long poet whose work, until recently, lived mainly in file drawers and boxes. Originally an art major, she studied printmaking in Florence, Italy in 1973, where she combined art and calligraphy on a series of zinc plates to create a small book of her poetry, which is the closest she came to being published during her first half-century of writing. She left school the following year to get married and raise a family, but in 1981 became the sole support for her children. Returning to work in her father’s growing business, she focused on fields that the business needed her to know: Engineering Drawing, Systems Analysis, Production and Inventory Control, Human Resources Management. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 1988, her last two decades of work were marked by increasing disability, with the final ten years only extended through multiple surgeries to remove or replace joints in her hands and feet. By the time she retired, the RA had taken her ability to play the piano, to draw or paint, and to work in her garden. But the poetry remains, the one constant that began at around 6 years of age and wound its way through life like a tenacious vine. Her own experience of poetry has led her to agree with Robert Frost’s assertion that “to be a poet is a condition, not a profession.” After retiring, she joined a poetry club at AARP, and began to share her poetry on a wider scale for the first time. One of the poets there referred her to Empirical Magazine, where three of her poems were accepted for publication. In addition to Empirical, and the Best of Empirical 2013 Anthology, her poems have now been published by Rattle’s Poets’ Respond, at the Society of Classical Poets, in SCP’s 2016 and 2017 Journals, and in The Epoch Times. She won 2nd place in the Society of Classical Poets 2017 Annual Poetry Contest. She lives in California.
