‘Golf’ and Other Poetry by Russel Winick

Golf

My friends love golf so much
But I do not share the allure.
There’re many other ways for me
To function like manure.

It’s Love

Last night we watched old videos
Our kids were 3 and 4
I told one son about it
And he said “You must be bored.”

Until I had a wife and kids
I knew not what love was
And now my son can’t know it yet,
I hope someday he does.

Confidence

The NBA’s first ever
Three-point contest beckoned.
And putting on his sneakers
Larry Bird asked “Who’ll get second?”

Mr. Winick recently started writing poetry at nearly age 65, after ending a long legal career. He resides in Naperville, Illinois.

    Russel,

In “Golf” I did not understand the “manure” reference, unless you mean the goose crap that covers most of the golf courses around here, thanks to an overabundance of Canada geese that spend the summer here in New England.

“It’s Love” was the best of the three, but in the penultimate line “though” would have worked better than “now.”

“Confidence” strikes home, if only because I have lived in the Boston area for several decades.
