Autumn in Vermont

October’s maples blaze a way
__around a tall church steeple
and sugar maples have their say
__by raining gold on people.

Such leafy vibrance begs to call
__all those who wish to see,
the winded leaves like waterfalls
__that flow so splendidly.

Those colored vistas from afar
__of mountains touching clouds
may beckon one to drive their car
__where misty mornings shroud

a covered bridge midst cool, crisp air-
__a poem of its own
where wind blown leaves land everywhere
__to places yet unknown.

.

.

Cliffs of Moher

Beyond the edge, the Aran Islands dot
my view along the sweep and crash of waves.
The deep Atlantic’s heart and shipwrecked graves
sway to the flux of time, the grieving caught
in calming sunset. There, a distant yacht
begins to catch low light. The shoreline craves
the cooler air and watchful stars. Dusk saves
a red horizon, seething into thought.
I ponder coming morn upon cold rock
beneath my feet. Gulls cries go echoing.
Prevailing winds befriend me. There’s a flock
of kitty hawks beyond and night will sing.
Recurring billows crash, time on the clock,
as high upon the cliffs, my heart takes wing.

“Autumn” is charming. Vermont is one of the most splendid states for fall foliage. In the line “a poem of it’s own”, the correct usage is “its” (possessive), not “it’s (the contraction for “it is”).

      Hi Cheryl,

Thanjs so much for your reply. Yes, I know it should be ‘its’. It must have slipped by me. Have a lovely Autumn.
