‘Henry at Morning Time’: A Poem by Nathaniel Todd McKee

Henry at Morning Time

I’m lost in Greek or Latin, when
You break into my life again.
“Daddy, look! It’s morning time,”
You say, as rays of sun sublime
Bring color to the room.

The leaves of Philosophes serene
Read better in this morning gleam,
But I’ll not sit here reading long—
“Let’s play!” you say and like a song
You capture all my thought.

We read a story, build a tent,
Or ride the bronco, my back bent:
You climb, I gently overthrow.
You beg, “Three things!” before I go.
Goodbye, good morning hug.

I’ll search these shelves with ease one day,
And read, and yearn to catch a ray
Of golden sun that memory
Recalls; not serendipity,
But taste of earth renewed.

.

This is such a precious poem that takes me back in my own memories to a time when I lived on a farm where “the taste of earth renewed” was a constant in my life.

Roy, thank you, that must have been a very special place indeed.

Such a charming poem. Odd that I was thinking this morning of the phrase “morning time, But we said it at bedtime; as in “See you in the morning time”.
    .
In fact, I still say it, and consider it a lovely phrase.
    Thanks for a lovely poem.

Sally, thank you, and we typically say it at night also, just as you described it.

Sparkling poem in an interesting stanza form, Nathan. I love the expression, “like a song you capture all my thought.”
