Beneath a greater star,
My sorrows would have been reprieved
By powers great and far.
Were I to have been born as strong
As storm and fire and sea,
Your royal heart would never belong
To any man but me.
Yet surely as the evening sets
Her cover over the day,
And wintry hoar falls and besets
The dainty flowers of May,
I’ll lay to rest all blissful thoughts
Of passion and desire,
And smother out the spark that wrought
This once enticing fire.
