‘Winter Whispers’ by Carter Davis Johnson

Upon a winter’s evening,
The sun sits out of sight,
While all the stars are dreaming,
I peer into the night.

My footsteps slowly falling,
The silence they do break.
I hear a soft voice calling,
A voice, a voice opaque.

I bend my ear to listen.
What do the whispers say?
The moonlight twirls and glistens,
While fighting off the day.

The voice grows ever bolder.
At last I know who lends.
A warmth begins to smolder.
I’ll hold her once again.

Carter Davis Johnson is an English major and cadet at the Virginia Military Institute. He grew up in Roanoke, Virginia.

Well done! The rhyming and the meter are good, and the images of nature are beautiful.
