a rose in December (Superbass)‘The Last Petal’: A Poem by Alani Timmons The Society September 19, 2024 Beauty, High School Submissions, Poetry 10 Comments . The Last Petal In a garden old and wise, Where blooms and seasons intertwine, A rose stood tall against the skies, Its petals bright, its heart divine. But time, unseen, began to stir, A single petal loosed its hold, And with it fell a whispered word, A story ending, softly told. One by one, the petals fell, A silent dance, a slow goodbye, The colors dimmed, the garden’s spell Faded like a waning sky. Yet in the fall, a truth was found, That life’s a bloom, both bright and brief, And in its cycle we are bound To moments sweet and touched with grief. As the last petal kissed the breeze, A tender bud began to grow, A promise made, a future teased, Within the heart of time’s soft flow. For life is like the rose’s bloom, Each petal falling, one by one, But from the barest, darkest gloom, New life will rise, as sure as sun. . . Alani Timmons is currently a high schooler in Queens, New York. NOTE TO READERS: If you enjoyed this poem or other content, please consider making a donation to the Society of Classical Poets. This fresh retelling of an age-old concept is rewarding to the senses of the reader and a credit to the poet. Reply jd September 19, 2024 Yes, to all of the above. A lovely read to begin the morning, Alani. Thank you! Reply Shamik Banerjee September 19, 2024 A refreshing read! Well done, Alani! Reply Peg September 19, 2024 Dear Miss Timmons, Thank you for this beautiful poem, you have brought joy and hope to me through this!! PLEASE continue to write… Reply David Paul Behrens September 19, 2024 A wonderful poem, from beginning to end. Thank you! Reply Paul A. Freeman September 20, 2024 Wow! Such a young and fine poet, Alani. The Last Petal gallops along faultlessly. I especially liked the second stanza, and the line, ‘Faded like a waning sky’ brings a wonderful image largely through its unusual wording. The simplicity of the vocabulary, too, makes this poem accessible to all. Good job! Reply Adam Sedia September 21, 2024 I am always amazed by the talent of the high school students published here, and this is no exception. Please keep writing. This poem is full of promise. Reply Cynthia Erlandson September 21, 2024 This is wonderful writing! Your second line, especially, entrances me: “Where blooms and seasons intertwine.” It is so visual, I imagined the stems of flowers literally intertwining with each other, as they figuratively intertwine with the seasons. Definitely, keep writing! Reply C.B. Anderson September 21, 2024 The accolades above, Alani, are well deserved. I have seen December roses, and they always amaze. Reply Maria September 23, 2024 A truly lovely poem, thank you Alani and well done.
