poems 'Newlyweds' by John Kastamo

We are a young ocean. We,
__with merry veins once meek and coy,
shall fill the belly of this sea.
And at our bounds of God’s decree
__pleasant lines will drink in joy.

As our waters swim and swell,
__with tides swing dancing to our poles,
the great wayfaring whales will tell
of wonders deep we’ll know so well
__with wet ink on ancient scrolls.

So let’s venture, me and you,
__and dare the waves of warm monsoons.
Yet keep, my Love, those coves we knew
of beauty still in aqua hue,
__to relive quaint honeymoons.

Those harbors old’ll prove their worth
__when we can’t calm the raging gales;
and wrecks with lodes of sin and earth
will drown in gulfs of length and girth
__as our ocean’s weight prevails.

We are a young ocean. We,
__if God allows, will age, and dry,
and a told tale of love we’ll be.
But risen from this memory
we will, on winds in wing’d glory,
__fly the ocean* of the sky.

*Revelation 19:6-10

John, don’t give it up. But make firmer decisions about how you want to deal with meter and other prosodic issues. And remember that you are a newlywed only for a short time.
