Come see the twisted face Of devilry beneath each wily lie. The truth has been erased without a trace To coax the mild and make the wild comply. Potions in perpetual supply Are rolled out at a wicked, warp-speed pace, Then pumped into the coerced by the sly. The mask is off. Come see the twisted face. The side effects and deaths are a disgrace, But who will do truth’s duty and decry The charlatans whose schmooze defends the case For devilry beneath each wily lie? Since my first rondeau redouble I have come to understand the meticulous craft which goes into writing a challenging form such as this. I am therefore both astonished and dazzled that you were able to write it, polish it and publish it at warp speed! On a general note, I can see from some of your recent poems that you have decided to take the devil on no-holds-barred. That is a brave and wonderful thing. We have a common enemy, you and I! As for the anger you display in this poem, I fully understand your passion since I have in the past acted as an advocate for children – our most vulnerable. Parents generally try to do the right thing. I don’t know enough about the vaccine to really say aye or nay but I do know that it is a terrible thing to take away parental choice in things like medical care. It’s also a mistake, I think, to leave important decisions to children who do not have the life-experience to be able to make informed choices. Personally, I am greatly disturbed by the current practice of pitting children against parents to force life-altering decisions like prepubescent gender reassignment on children who can’t possibly understand the implications of what they’re doing. I love this form for its repetition… and I really wanted to hammer the points you make home. Our children are indeed our most vulnerable members of society, and at the moment they are the most ill treated, especially on the prepubescent gender reassignment front. So many decisions are being taken out of parents’ hands by those who have no care whatsoever for our children, and I needed to vent my spleen poetically. I am heartened to have your backing and would like to thank you for the part you have played in acting as an advocate for children. In today’s cruel world, they need all the help they can get. A beautiful treatment of a dastardly subject. I am grateful for Mike reiterating the unspiked facts as Comments begin. These become tiring to repeat for those of us who have heard them over and over, but clearly they bear repeating ad infinitum, both in prose and verse. I immediately thought of the “nu variant” stories I’m hearing. Children were recently dangerous to adults as possible virus transmitters, but since many of them have been back to in-person school, there are now alarming surges everywhere of actual cases in children. Of course the risks remain where they were for the children; adults now fear numbers rather than illness. Or, when a child is sent home for two weeks to get over a case without symptoms, the mother may be annoyed by loss of her own freedom and income. But after all, this devilry is payback to those who considered it an injustice to keep children out of school. Now that they are back in, of course lockdowners must be logically aghast at the result, and punish whole families for wanting a normal life. Brian above speaks of children being pitted against their parents in matters on which, as prepubescents, they are incapable of making informed choices. I have heard of children as young as four being asked if they would like to be a boy or a girl when they are grown up, opening up to them the possibilities of gender re-assignment before they can write their own names. It is prurient, it is disgusting; it is dastardly, as Margaret remarks above, and it is the worst possible disservice of all at such an age to be pitting children against their parents in matters of choice at all, never mind in those that engender responsibilities that a small child is incapable of assuming. That is what its parents are there for. They are not there to cook a child a well-balanced meal and then to say to the child, “Do you like carrots, parsnips? Do you want any beans? Do you not like peas? Yes, no, no, yes. Giving choices even at the level of what they eat is imposing responsibilities they don’t need. Throughout the animal kingdom parents know what to feed their own offspring, and their offspring eat what they are given. Thank you Susan, once again, for painting such an eloquent picture of one of the great abuses of our age. For too many years our children have had their childhood stolen. Parents are often portrayed as an inconvenience – the government’s ideal is the way forward. Only they know what is best for our children. The trouble is, they don’t. And, that is exactly why the children are suffering. And, guess what? I’m beginning to sound just like my grandparents. I simply have to go in search of a plethora of pudgy gluts and put them to good use in a poem about the wonder of capybaras before I buy a tartan shawl and start sucking Werther’s Originals during old episodes of Morecambe and Wise.
